Video Premiere: Mise en Scene’s “Waster”

Winnipeg’s Mise en Scene is a indie/power pop group that you need to know about. While one can gather references of Hole, Dum Dum Girls, The Distillers, and others, the group’s songwriting remains refreshingly unique. Their latest album, Still Life On Fire, was released over the summer. Singer Stefanie Blondal Johnson began writing the album while taking part in a musicians residency at the renowned Banff Arts Centre in the winter of 2014, and was recorded in Winnipeg, produced by Montréal-based mastermind Mike Nash.

With their latest single, “Waster“, the band says:

“This song is about how people waste your time. It’s about finding a connection and wrapping yourself around someone’s world, believing and supporting what that person says and what that person represents, only to be rejected and dismissed by them. Having the guts to put yourself out there in a relationship to find no glory (reiterated theme connection here to “Guts/Glory”). The song announces these people as “wasters” because they are a “waste of time” to your life and the bigger picture. The song also illuminates and reminds the listener that you “won’t miss this”, you won’t look back on your life missing the times you shared together with this person. The song encourages self respect and mutual respect in relationships, if that isn’t happening, those people are “wasters” and they waste your time, but don’t worry, you won’t miss that when you’re gone.”
