Broken Social Scene member Ariel Engle has embarked on a solo endeavor as La Force, combining subtle electronica with more earthly origins.
Her video for latest single “Lucky One” is a psychedelic match to the song’s haunting minimalism. While the production is subdued to allow for Engle’s vocals to remain front and center, the video takes a different approach. Through a sheen of manipulated film we just make out the image of Engle, as if caught on the other side of a distorted liquid light show. “We preferred to leave room for the viewer’s imagination rather than impose a way of interpreting the song,” remarks artist Charles-Andre Coderre. “I did a special color chemical treatment on 16mm film to create the foregrounded image. Ariel appears as a spectre, kind of a distant reminiscence under ayers of film.”
While the contrast of fast moving pops of color and the slower tempo of the tune might first appear dissonant, it soon turns mesmerizing. It’s more a meditation than a story, allowing the viewer to sink into the sound rather than analyze its meaning. Engle says, “The video for ‘Lucky One’ is striking in its restraint. There’s a purposeful lack of both narrative and fast cuts. It features instead Charles-Andre Coderre’s manipulated film over images of La Force. It’s meditative in its simplicity. An emotional mirror of the song.”
