Tropicália 2019 Festival Recap

This year’s Tropicalia Festival reflects a special moment in Los Angeles music & culture today. The diverse lineup captured the rising Latinx movement in the mainstream while paying homage to the pioneers of the genre.

Young indie-leaning artists such as Cuco, Omar Apollo, and Boy Pablo have been gaining traction in the streaming and festival worlds, and the crowds on Sunday night proved it. The festival, originally slated for Pico Rivera Arena, sold out so fast that Goldenvoice moved it to the Pomona Fairplex.

However, the festival also built an impressive roster of legacy artists, such as Saturday night headline set by norteño legends Los Tigres del Norte. It was cool to see pioneering Mexican rock band Maldita Vecindad on the same stage as bedroom pop band Bane’s World.

Plus, an excellent array of tacos, very few lines, and amazing people watching made Tropicalia a memorable and fun weekend.Looking forward to seeing how both the festival and L.A. Latin music scene evolves in future years.
