Shopping options for miles, plenty of natural spaces, a selection of indulgent easts as big as the Lone Star State itself, and one of the most prolific music scenes in the country – Austin has it all. In the absence of SXSW, we’re feeling the Austin love a little extra, so why not celebrate the city and spotlight all of its offerings?
There’s truly no shortage of activities and attractions in Texas’s capital, and to help you navigate it all, we’ve compiled a list of the can’t-miss locations with recommendations from Austin artists!
Ready to spend the perfect day navigating all Austin has to offer? Head to the wild west and let these artists take you around the city like a local!
First, coffee – and Austin has plenty of it! Check out Mazama Coffee Co. for that perfect cup and grab a pastry for a little something extra. A favorite of Israel Nash, the shop houses a rustic-chic environment with a scenic patio for sipping (and free Wi-Fi – score!).
“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” In Austin, this means donning your best blue jeans, a pair of boots to match, and the perfect cowboy hat to top it all off. Get over to Allens Boots, the one-stop shop for all things western style, to turn on your Texas Swagger. If you’ve ever been envious of William Harries Graham’s fashion sense, this is the store for you!
If your style’s a little more classic, head to Stag Provisions for a trendy selection of menswear. Billy King and the Bad Bad Bad swear by the stock, and suggest you take a look at the books and accessories as well!
Hungry already? For a bright and tropical dining experience, look no further than Launderette. Sharable plates, great cocktails, and ever birthday cake ice cream sandwiches if you’re craving something a little sweeter, this eatery is overflowing with delicious food options for everyone! If it’s a little too early for lunch, stop in for a brunch that Shy Beast call “a dream.” They say the pancakes, which come with their own kitty-cat syrup decanter, are a must-have.
What’s a trip to one of music’s biggest cities without a record store stop? Austin has plenty of great ones to offer, but Waterloo may just have the most extensive collection of records both old and new among them. The Lagoons say it has “the best selection of any record store in town!”
For the musicians among us, look to Austin Vintage Guitars for your personal paradise! A space for buying, selling, trading, or consigning vintage guitars, this shop has no shortage of classic six-strings for you to enjoy (or even take home!). Stop by if you’re wanting to jam as hard as The Sword does!
Lunch time has officially rolled around! Ready to take a bite out of the world-famous Tex-Mex cuisine? Check out Chupacabra Cantina for some classic Texas eats, including tacos, burritos, empanadas, and an impressive collection of cocktails. Gary Clark Jr. swears by it!
The blazing Texas heat is relentless, and you might find yourself in need of a little break. Cool down at the Barton Springs Pool, one of Austin’s many natural watering holes! Located on the grounds of Zilker Park, the recreational outdoor pool is filled entirely with water from a nearby spring, and the temperature varies between 68 °F and 74 °F year-round. Take a dip like Otis Wilkins and many other artists do on the regular!
Austin’s art scene is a must-see, and The Contemporary Austin is the premiere spot to take it all in. With a unique collection of indoor and outdoor exhibits, two primary locations, and eclectic pieces from artists all across the city, The Contemporary hosts all kinds of the incredible art the city has to offer. Sweet Spirit can’t recommend it enough!
Night life in Austin can only mean one thing – plenty of live music. Hole in the Wall keeps it going all evening, these days from the socially distant patio setting. A must for Okkervil River, this venue offers booze, tattoos, and music to spare.
If you’re ready to end the day with a drink, head to The Wheel, a friendly neighborhood bar with a relaxed atmosphere for all to enjoy. Walker Lukens describes it as “like Cheers without sad men sitting between you and the bartender.” Not sure on what to order? Ask Lukens for a recommendation – he’s had most of the menu.
