Orchestral strings. A dim light – typically red. We’ve seen these elements combined in a music video before. So how does Australian singer-songwriter Stu Larsen manage to capture the spectrum of love lost in a kaleidoscope of dreamscapes?
The video for “Wide Awake & Dreaming” accompanies the haunting, solemn, yet earnest tone of Larson’s voice by carrying us through a montage of contrasting spaces. We are with him during the rise of the relationship, as well as the fall – we see a lover pack up and leave, a symbol that has weighed through the test of time.
We are also taken to neighborhoods, plains, grassy hills, and rooms filled with dim lights. The path taken by the video’s protagonist played by Aylin Tezel showcases space not just by her urge to flee, but by her race around different environments. This change of pace and position grants the video’s viewer to understand that environment pales in comparison to the urge to leave.
Shot by Anthony Dickenson, “Wide Awake & Dreaming” paints in a palette of reds and blues the bittersweet feeling of wanderlust. When it’s time to go, where do we all go? A relevant question for a wanderer such as Stu Larson himself, whose current nomadic travels around the world keep fans wondering where he will leave to next.
