Richmond-based group Spooky Cool are experts at blurring the lines between what’s real and imagined.
On their new single, “Old Hair Mine,” real-life fears take supernatural form, as frontman Zac Hryciak explores his feelings in a dreamlike state. Spooky Cool are a band renowned for their rapid shifts in tone and tempo, characteristics on full display in their new track. Foreboding guitar notes kick the song into gear, reverb echoing through the nightmares in Hryciak’s head. Harmonized voices, including that of vocalist Paula Lavalle, loft us above the demons. Guitarist Zavi Harman’s riffing cuts in and out, leaving space for the intricate rhythms of bassist Sean Williams and drummer Lee Spratley.
The clean production highlights the band’s impressive musicianship. Individual instruments can be clearly identified, each adding its flavor to the mix. The band’s fearless experimentation with melody and timing results in a fascinating soundscape unlike anything else out there. Finding a niche isn’t easy in the modern music world, but Spooky Cool leverage their talent to create a unique sonic experience. “Old Hair Mine” is included on their upcoming EP Every Thing Ever, due out August 3.
