Song Premiere: Jaye Bartell “The Wilderness”

After spending 2016 on the road with Kevin Morby, Brooklyn based songwriter Jaye Bartell went back to his former home of Asheville for three-weeks to work on new material with producer Adam McDaniel and alas he is ready to bring that work out of the basement and onto the shelves of your local record store.  Lucky for Jaye, Asheville is kind of an underground cool kids hang so many of Bartell’s longtime musician friends happened to be around, joining in with various voices and instruments, including Shane Parish and Ryan Oslance (Ahleuchatistas), Angel Olsen, J Seger, Emily Easterly, Michael Libramento, and Noel Thrasher.  The album was recorded mostly live, experimenting with recording techniques and improvised instruments like an open window with chimes and springtime birds or a deconstructed music box, winding the tune “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” backwards.  In a Time of Trouble a Wild Exultation, is set to release October 20th on the Captured Tracks off shoot Sinderlyn Records.

“The best way to dance to this song is with one hand on your stomach and one hand in the air, like Calypso.”

To get you in the mood Jaye is letting his first single “The Wilderness” hit the interweb and make its way into your ears.  On “The Wilderness,” Jaye’s unconventional voice keeps him in a state of constant melancholy that is mostly set to an electric guitar that sings behind him. In this track Jaye graciously gives the guitar the role of adding the brightness. This moody folk track is one to roll us right into the fall, I can practically see the leaves changing now.

“The Wilderness of the title describes the opposite of stability or control, in the sense of a family and a household. I know the saying goes that all happy families are alike, and all unhappy families are unhappy in their own way, but I imagine every family is unhappy, so it’s all the same. But still we try, and I definitely do.”
