SINGLE: The Deals Tease Their Upcoming Album With New Single “The Levee”
editorial

Gearing up for their 2021 full-length album Clear and Severe, Chicago-based family band, The Deals, are set to release their new single “The Levee” on December 1st, 2020.

The Deals have a knack for writing music that feels light upon first approach but emotional and full of heart with a deeper listening experience. Suited for head bopping and driving with the volume on full blast, songs like “The Levee” are reminiscent of tracks by Citizen Cope or La Rocca with a classic early-2000s sound.

“The Levee is a bar in Chicago near my apartment and a favorite hang for the band. It’s a place that feels impossible, like a bar that time forgot, and somehow avoided extinction in yuppie bar culture. Anything beyond a whiskey sour here is dicey, and they don’t have taps. It’s magical. Embarrassingly, I wrote the song after my first night there, during a lunar eclipse in early 2019, making me a ‘poser.’ I’ve been too shy to show the song to any of the staff or the owner. I hope they read this and feel my love for their special little corner.” -Joe Suihkonen

“The Levee” builds in energy throughout the song, reaching its angsty peak with an electric guitar solo prior to the final batch of lyrics that serve as a come-down — a fitting finale characterized by ritardando. This retro piece is sure to strike a chord, and it’s just a sneak peak of what’s to come.

Tracked by Seth Engel at Pallet Sound, mixed by Doug Malone at JAMDEK, and mastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden, Clear and Severe is an energized journey that could be described as purposeful, controlled chaos. It represents the elements of life that we fear and how we cope with them through seizing the day and cherishing the moment. What’s life without a little laughter and spontaneity?
