Recap: Depeche Mode at the SAP Center, San Jose
show recap

Depeche Mode played to a sold out crowd at the first of their two bay area stops in San Jose on Sunday.

Frontman Dave Gahan prowled the stage in what could best be described as his Freddie Mercury meets John Waters persona. The sleazy rockstar look from the band’s 1997 video for “It’s No Good” was part caricature part flashback to his darker days battling demons but in a way a possible future had he carried on. Luckily the band are not forced to play motel lounges instead carting their hit packed tour around the world on yet another global trek for their latest album Spirit. Spirit’s second single “Going Backwards” opened the show with their trademark mix of synths and guitars and fit quite nicely into their catalog of hits from Violator to Songs of Faith and Devotion. A moving cover of Bowie’s “Heroes” and “Personal Jesus” closed out a solid setlist.
