Walking through what once was a busy space is so jarring. From a buzzy place to hang to an absolute wasteland, Nicholas Mallis explores a “new frontier” is his new video for “The Final Station”.
Athens, GA, pop artist, Nicholas Mallis, has released a video for “The Final Station”, the title track from his upcoming album out next month via Laser Brains. The video was shot and directed by Athens filmmaker, Patrick Morales who has made music videos for other Georgia artists including Neighbor Lady, Cicada Rhythm, Mothers, and Grand Vapids.
The song is a sci-fi glam rock jammer equipped with driving guitars and layers of moody synths. Mallis leads the stomp with his Bowie-esque croon, giving listeners fragments of dreams and memories as he drifts outside of the galaxy.
Mallis explains “In the video, I am wandering around a desolate mall in an astronaut outfit. The backdrop is grim, with lots of stores closed up and few customers around. This has become a common tale with malls across the country, especially in small Georgia towns. Patrick masterfully juxtaposes this footage with overlays of vintage space age clips. As no surprise, we got kicked out while shooting and I felt like I was 12 again.”
Over the past five years, Nicholas Mallis’ brand of weirdo pop and absurdist, over the top performances have been garnering him praise in Athens and beyond. He has shared bills with indie pop greats like Dan Deacon and Kishi Bashi and even played as a side man in the solo efforts of Athens legends Cindi Wilson and Fred Schneider (The B-52’s). In 2019, Nicholas released Artificial Irrelevance, a collection of glam pop songs that Flagpole Magazine referred to as “timeless.” After spending a year promoting and touring A.I., Nicholas has quickly turned out another album and he is gearing up to tour the east coast again this spring. The Final Station was recorded and produced by Nicholas at his home studio in Athens and mastered at The Glow by engineer/producer Jesse Mangum (Elf Power, Black Kids, Deep State).
The new album will be out June 5 via the Athens record label, Laser Brains. You can listen to “The Final Station” out now. Check it out down below and let us know what you think!
