Song Premiere: Matt Maeson strips down the passionate “Cringe”
los angeles

After grazing the Los Angeles indie rock scene with the self-aware, empowering “Cringe” and its viscerally cinematically music video, Matt Maeson upends any preconceived notions of the song’s emotional potential with an ethereal acoustic rendition.

Forsaking the plodding beat and blaring modulations of the original version, Maeson relies on dynamic piano chords and underlying vocal swells as his voice carries the rhythmic and melodic core of the song. His confident timbre and evocative emoting take center stage as the tracks minimalism gives the song a free-flowing dynamic range, while simultaneously upping the song’s emphatic accessibility and touching power.

The song’s undercurrents dealing with the search for redemption, evokes Maeson’s history in prison ministry. His impassioned singing cuts to the core, telling the story of one struggling against his or her transgressions. Though he might not play his songs in front of the Hell’s Angels types, he elicits a genuine desire to point listeners towards a life of transcendence and triumph. A cautionary and melancholy tale on its exterior, Maeson’s message is ultimately one of empowered resolve.

On July 11th, Maeson will tour this summer, hitting LA, NYC, Nashville and many places in between.
