Following a hiatus with band Roseburg, singer Zach Knell tackles anxiety on his debut single through latest solo project Righteous Punk.
“A Tree, A Punk, 2 Masks, A Dove” pulls in imagery and themes familiar to Roseburg fans while allowing Knell complete creative control over where the sound goes in the future.
References to Knell’s times with Roseburg are shared on the single in the form of lyrical anecdotes. Listeners hear references to characters like Righteous Punk, Miss Sunshine and lines of Roseburg songs from as far back as 2018.
The song features a co-write from Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens, a past collaborator of Knell’s.
“‘A Tree, A Punk, 2 Masks, A Dove’ was written in early 2020 when I went up to southern Oregon and stayed at Kellin’s house,” Knell said. “The beginnings of this song was one of my favorite things we did together, so I came back home and wrote/produced the rest of it in my bedroom studio. The sound, the words, the vibe… it all felt like a perfect first Righteous Punk song.”
Knell also tapped Grammy award-winning recording and mix engineer Adam Hawkins (Twenty One Pilots, Walk the Moon, 5 Seconds of Summer) for his debut single.
“I have been a big fan of Adam Hawkins’ work for years—specifically his work on Twenty One Pilots’ Trench and Blurryface. I thought he would be the perfect person to send the files to to mix this first song,” Knell said.
“Dream come true being able to work with him.”
