editorial

On Friday, October 30, Former Foxygen Member Kevin Basko came out with a new album, Adventure Violence, Scary Images. A sonic painting of Kevin’s life during the quarantine, this LP is your perfect lockdown soundtrack.

A Berklee College of Music graduate, Kevin Basko is incredibly dedicated to his craft, and gifted with distinctive style. The album Adventure Violence, Scary Images sounds as though it was written in the 60s or 70s, with vocals and instrumentals reminiscent of The Who among other renowned bands. It pulls from the past while incorporating subtle modern twists.

The album opens with head-bopping rock anthem, “Cinderella,” featuring Kevin’s voice in a raw, conversational form. Songs like “Selfish Song For Me” and “Turn It All Around” feature smoother synth instrumentals, while “Warm Little Song” and “Acupuncture Hi Five” bring in soft acoustic guitar. A personal favorite, the evocative “Our Life Was the Part of Me In a Dream” brings the listener into a beautiful dreamscape that can be compared to the feeling you get when listening to the opening riff of Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds. The album is an eclectic mix that showcases Kevin’s unique ability to create sonic variety.

As a touring musician in Jackie Cohen’s band, Kevin has supported acts like Mac DeMarco and Weyes Blood. As a member of Foxygen, he shared stages with the likes of The Strokes, The Flaming Lips, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and many other incredible, prevalent bands.
