The 23-year-old singer, formally known as Jacob Sullenger, and formerly known as Johnny Utah is best known for his 2019 single “Honeypie,” the song having had a moment on TikTok earlier this year.
JAWNY has been praised by critics such as Zane Lowe of Beats 1, showing that a self-described “all-over-the-place” work mentality pays off sometimes. Let JAWNY introduce himself and his latest project, For Abby, below:
Can you tell us about your journey as an artist for our readers who may not be familiar with your music?
I got my start in music as a producer when I was making beats for rappers and I did that from age 15-19 and then at 20 I started releasing my own music with my voice on it and slowly started growing myself naturally. Here we are all these years later.
I’m in my boxers talking to y’all. Who woulda thought??
Why did you decide to change your artist name back in 2018?
I just needed a name for my first solo project and I was watching Point Break looking at Keanu Reeves do a bunch of sexy surfing and shooting with his gun and I figured I might as well name myself after him. Then Johnny Utah was born.
Shortly after Johnny Utah died though, and then Jawny was born. Life goes on…
How did TikTok impact your musical career? Has it affected it both short-term and long-term? I believe I remember your 2019 song “Honeypie” being all over the FYP this past summer.
I actually wasn’t on TikTok at the time when all that was going on so I kinda missed it hahaha. I would say it definitely affected it short time by having a song have a moment for about a year and also affected the long term by my life changing forever.
Like music is my job now and the thing that I was looked at as crazy for doing all those years ago; being called a dreamer is now the thing that makes me live the most comfortable I’ve ever lived.
Which tracks on “For Abby” stand out the most to you and why?
All of em! I know that’s not the answer you were looking for but it’s really true. I was in the most lost headspace I’ve ever been in in my entire adult life and it was the first time writing music was therapeutic for me. You can hear it in the lyrics haha.
Abby isn’t a person but she represents people that have been or are in my life.
How would you best describe your overall sound?
Country K-pop. Every song. That’s what it is.
What’s the perfect setup or scene for listening to “For Abby”?
Butt ass naked on the hardwood after a run so your back is a lil sweaty and the floor feels cold.
JAWNY’s latest project, For Abby, is set for release on Oct. 27, 2020 via Interscope Records. Check out his discography below:
