Evalyn Dishes on Her Favorite LA Thrifting Spots

Based in Venice Beach, Evalyn makes infectious synth pop inspired by the dreamy California vibes of her home base.

Her newest EP, Salvation is out now, and as the name suggests, the subject matter goes deep with each song dedicated to the seven deadly sins. Much of the record deals with her life in LA and observations made in the city of angels.

While the music itself is upbeat, the undertones lean a bit darker. From the pitfalls of our celebrity culture to cults and more, Evalyn lets us in on a world that is both obsessed and magical. Haunting vocals are littered throughout the EP giving way to darker thoughts and imaginings. This is especially apparent in the song, “Angels,” where she sings about being “high on power and fame,” while the track “A Pill to Crush” deals with addiction. But there are lighter moments, and  “Salvation (Interlude)” acts as the high point of the EP — a break in the clouds.

Being based in Venice, Evalyn not only has access to one of So Cal’s coolest music scenes, she also has many a vintage shop to explore at her fingertips. So listen to Salvation below and read on for Evalyn’s guide to LA thrifting.

Animal House is located right under the Venice sign on Windward and although the street can get a bit touristy, locals know that this is the best spot for vintage and thrift finds. Lots to choose from and cool folks running the place.

This place is such a hidden vibe. If you’re lucky enough to stumble into this little booth among tourist merch shops, you’ll find everything from vintage playboys to groovy worn out denim.

I lived in Silverlake for a short stint and I was completely in love with this flea market. I found a sweater with a hand painted map of the world on it. Unreal. Tons of gems.

West Hollywood

Wasteland is the best. Specifically the one in West Hollywood. No shade toward the Santa Monica location, I’m west side all the way. But it’s hard to walk out without your arms full at that Melrose location, so many wild items.

West Hollywood

Okay, so Melrose Trading Post can be a bit of a pain in the ass when it’s super packed. But if you mentally prepare yourself for the chaos, then you can find the coolest stuff here. It’s an endless maze of thrift paradise.

Jet Rag is f*cking nuts. It’s hard core. I couldn’t even find a website, just a link to an LA Mag article about how insane it is. They have a $1 sale on Sundays that is the Super Bowl of thrift and in general you can pick up everything here from a cute top to a hazmat suit to a wig.

West Hollywood

This place is the mecca of vintage tees. Its selections are drool worthy, although don’t actually drool on anything because these tees are definitely on the pricier side.
