In the latest installment of Dr. Marten’s Presents Music and Film series, filmmaker Ali Roberto shares the magic of up-and-coming hip hop duo, Blimes & Gab.
This LA based power duo dives into the struggles of navigating a music career during this uncertain time. While the rappers had planned to release their first full length album together in March, the two initially decided they would push back their highly anticipated release. Of course, the world didn’t resume as quickly as we all hoped. Blimes & Gab ended up releasing Talk About It in June despite obstacles the pandemic presented.
The rappers share how this unique situation actually presented an opportunity for fans to sit down and listen to the album the way it was intended to be consumed– front to back. Getting it out during a period when the world had slowed down created an amazing response from fans. Blimes shares that it was “a blessing to get to release at this time.”
Blimes, who came from the world of battle rap, and Gab, who’s earliest musical influences came from singing in her church choir, joined forces as a duo about two and half years ago. With both artists also leading successful solo careers, they’ve been making music together for many years while collaborating for their individual discographies. The two take pride in the fact they’ve created a sound that showcases their individuality while naturally achieving a dynamic synergy.
After spending so much time away from fans while writing and recording, it’s a massive disappointment to not be able to share their music face to face. Gab explains how the “energy exchange” that’s created in a live music space is so important to their creative processes. Connecting with fans after a show and hearing how their music is making a difference is one of the biggest rewards of being a musician that Blimes & Gab are missing intensely this year.
Luckily, the duo had the opportunity to put on a private rooftop show for their closest friends in this latest episode performing the track ‘Baptism’ off of their latest record – Blimes and Gab also recently dropped a music video for the song! Check out this performance and learn more about the duo’s journey through the year 2020 in this brand new installment of Dr. Marten’s Music and Film Series.
